Home school for your high schooler

Homeschooling at any age can be a challenge, but we have found that home schooling our high school aged children has been the most challenging.  We want to make sure they have everything they need for the real world, but also all the credits they need to get into college.   
The challenge is not so much with our children, but with finding high school curriculum for home schooling.  Most of the home school curriculum is younger grade based usually below 8th grade.  Yes there are some home school programs out there that have high school aged curriculum, but some of those can be very costly and when you are on a budget it makes it difficult.

We prefer to create our own home school curriculum rather than buy something expensive.  Creating your own home school curriculum can be interesting and fun, whether for your younger children or your high schoolers.  With our high schoolers we can include them in creating something they can be interested in and still get the number of credits for graduation.

Themed unit studies are one way of creating home school curriculum for your high school children.   You can determine your children's area of interest whether it be Egypt, Civil War, Automotive, Cooking or any of hundreds of other options.  Themed units should be able to include reading, writing, math, history and science at least.

So how do I put a themed unit study together?  Research on the subject is key to creating a home school curriculum yourself.  Let's take Cooking as an example for a high school themed unit study.  The children will need to read recipes and show basic understanding of using it to cook with, they will use math and science when measuring and combining ingredients and of course it is good to learn some history of cooking, techniques and styles.

As you can see creating a home school curriculum for your high schooler can be a challenge. Creating your home school curriculum takes some work up front, but in the end when you see how much more interested your children are in learning it is all worth it!

Home Schooling and Charlotte Mason's Methodology

So you have made a decision to have your kid's home schooled. Good for you! Kids who gain their education in the comforts of their home have proven to have better results on tests and with their grades, do better in college and among the work force. Families that home school are more bonded than those that don't. Aside from your rationale for putting your children through home school, have you thought about the kind of curriculum you want to follow? Have you started investigating the array of options and techniques that are available? Making a decision on the option for homeschooling curriculum doesn't have to be a trying matter. With some analysis you can make up a curriculum that is effective for you and your kids. Here are some things you can contemplate.

Have you heard of Charlotte Mason's methodology? Charlotte Mason was a turn of the century educator. She approached education with three major focuses: life, discipline and atmosphere. It involves the use of "living" books instead of textbooks and focusing on the overall atmosphere of the home. Her ideas and methods were quite stringent centered on good study and academic habits while still making sure that schooling subjects are approached through "living" examples rather than raw facts. Her curriculum is available almost anywhere. Montessori and Waldorf schools are also becoming popular. Waldorf schools are often held to a more advanced standard than others. Some people joke about them being "schools for geniuses." The great news is that Montessori and Waldorf school curriculums can be found in Home school platforms too. The focus of Montessori curriculum is in keeping children active and working while they learn. No one wants to watch your kids learn through watching television or a computer screen all day. If you agree then this may be the plan for you.

There are several factors to consider when determining the best home school curriculum for you and your kids. At the top of this list of factor is your children's personal learning styles.

You will also need to consider your teaching strengths and weaknesses. As you set up your curriculum for the year, you have some freedom to play up your strengths, luckily. You don't necessarily stick to strict curriculum practices or units which allows you to play up everybody's strengths and points out where you need improve.

The decision to home school your kids can be made for several reasons. You may not like your public schools. Maybe you can't afford private school. Or perhaps you've researched home schooling and found that kids that are home schooled do better later in life. But no matter why you've decided to home school, make sure that you are getting a good curriculum. It is very important to find the best curriculum for your child. Choosing the right Science curriculum for your home school program

The is one of the most vital of subjects to understand as the realm of the Sciences intertwines with all the other core subjects necessary for a well-rounded and complete general education during the K-12 years. Before beginning to map out your children's and its content, a few tasks need to be accomplished to ensure you find the best solutions for your child.

1. Determine your child's grade placement - If previously in a public or private school, get the lesson plans, or at least subject areas, of their instruction before .

4. Compare at least three to five and sources for the course content requirements in Step 3. Find the sources that either somewhat overlap, refresh, or begin the next progression of the curriculum. This can be augmented by placement testing for the learning level. Placement tests are easily found through search engines and many are free to download. Some may contain tests for Bible studies, but the remainder of the tests helps determine your child's knowledge level without reference to religious or secular factors. They also identify where your child is in relation to the BOE grade requirements before going to Step 5 in developing their program.

5. Evaluate the new progression for the next two to three school years, or four to six semesters, to make sure there is a smooth and logical progression in the content for the remaining years of their program. This process should be done each year to allow adjustments for new course content or revised curriculum requirements.

6. Select the best for your child's program. Congratulations! You are now done with the easy part. Teaching the content and staying on schedule is the difficult, but most rewarding part.

Home Schooling Your Child With Learning Disabilities

Children are often bullied and teased during their school years. For children with learning disabilities this teasing can be relentless and make them terrified to go to school each day. Introduction to Home Schooling

Home schooling is not easy and most parents that do home schooling will admit to you that it is a lot tougher. It is for this reason that many parents who do home schooling get together with home schooling groups, which does make it easier. Fortunately, there are a lot of books and resources on the subject. Check your local library as a starting point. You also may find general home schooling curriculums online. Once you find a home schooling curriculum to work with, you will need to figure out how much leeway you have with it. One of the advantages of home schooling is you can allow your children to gravitate toward subjects that interest them.

There are many ways you can home school online. Some traditional high schools offer online programs. An advantage to home schooling online in this manner is that a local school system is available to make sure your child is receiving the proper testing and studying the proper subjects. They usually supply a curriculum and have a system of checks and balances to make sure your children are studying required subjects. Home schooling lets your children learn about things that interest them, but it doesn’t mean they should ignore other skills.

Let's face it but you have to realize that during the past few years home schooling has become increasingly popular. This is in addition to the more accepted arguments for or against home schooling. The reasons behind many families choosing to homeschool are many. It has to be remembered that before public schooling was considered the norm that home schooling was. Closer family relationships have also been found to be a result of home schooling.

Home schooling is legal in the United States, even if there have been and still are many controversies on the issue of whether or not the child is benefiting from this procedure; this issue if still being debated and even a banning of this practice may be applied if enough evidence is found that children do not actually benefit from it.

Home Schooling Disadvantages

Many parents eager to begin home schooling their children have though long and hard about the benefits home schooling will bring to their children. But unfortunately they often fail to consider the home schooling disadvantages which can also play a big part in their children’s academic and social development. While parents may love the idea of allowing their kids to learn at their own pace without being pressured to keep up or labeled “dummies” if they need to spend more time than most of their classmates in mastering a subject, one of the home schooling disadvantages which they may not be factoring into their home schooling decision is whether or not their skills as teachers are up to helping their kids learn difficult material.

Expertise in each subject area and the art of teaching are among the biggest disadvantages in home schooling. Certified public school teachers take several courses on teaching methods, strategies, and learning disabilities. Heavy content area specific classes are taken as well.

Required Subjects

The basic home schooling curriculum, however, is similar in all US states. It includes math, science history, and English, and children will of course have to learn how to read and write. Parents whose children show aptitude for other subjects like music, writing, or art can include those if they wish. The parents will be required to maintain a daily log of their childrens’ lessons, and the children will be required to progress at least as quickly as their public school counterparts. But the specific rules for home schooling may very from state to state.
