Homeschooling at any age can be a challenge, but we have found that home schooling our high school aged children has been the most challenging.  We want to make sure they have everything they need for the real world, but also all the credits they need to get into college.   
The challenge is not so much with our children, but with finding high school curriculum for home schooling.  Most of the home school curriculum is younger grade based usually below 8th grade.  Yes there are some home school programs out there that have high school aged curriculum, but some of those can be very costly and when you are on a budget it makes it difficult.

We prefer to create our own home school curriculum rather than buy something expensive.  Creating your own home school curriculum can be interesting and fun, whether for your younger children or your high schoolers.  With our high schoolers we can include them in creating something they can be interested in and still get the number of credits for graduation.

Themed unit studies are one way of creating home school curriculum for your high school children.   You can determine your children's area of interest whether it be Egypt, Civil War, Automotive, Cooking or any of hundreds of other options.  Themed units should be able to include reading, writing, math, history and science at least.

So how do I put a themed unit study together?  Research on the subject is key to creating a home school curriculum yourself.  Let's take Cooking as an example for a high school themed unit study.  The children will need to read recipes and show basic understanding of using it to cook with, they will use math and science when measuring and combining ingredients and of course it is good to learn some history of cooking, techniques and styles.

As you can see creating a home school curriculum for your high schooler can be a challenge. Creating your home school curriculum takes some work up front, but in the end when you see how much more interested your children are in learning it is all worth it!

So you have made a decision to have your kid's home schooled. Good for you! Kids who gain their education in the comforts of their home have proven to have better results on tests and with their grades, do better in college and among the work force. Families that home school are more bonded than those that don't. Aside from your rationale for putting your children through home school, have you thought about the kind of curriculum you want to follow? Have you heard of Charlotte Mason's methodology? Charlotte Mason was a turn of the century educator. She approached education with three major focuses: life, discipline and atmosphere. It involves the use of "living" books instead of textbooks and focusing on the overall atmosphere of the home. Her ideas and methods were quite stringent centered on good study and academic habits while still making sure that schooling subjects are approached through "living" examples rather than raw facts. Her curriculum is available almost anywhere. Montessori and Waldorf schools are also becoming popular. Waldorf schools are often held to a more advanced standard than others. Some people joke about them being "schools for geniuses." The great news is that Montessori and Waldorf school curriculums can be found in Home school platforms too. The focus of Montessori curriculum is in keeping children active and working while they learn. No one wants to watch your kids learn through watching television or a computer screen all day. If you agree then this may be the plan for you.

There are several factors to consider when determining the best home school curriculum for you and your kids. At the top of this list of factor is your children's personal learning styles.

You will also need to consider your teaching strengths and weaknesses. As you set up your curriculum for the year, you have some freedom to play up your strengths, luckily. You don't necessarily stick to strict curriculum practices or units which allows you to play up everybody's strengths and points out where you need improve.

The decision to home school your kids can be made for several reasons. You may not like your public schools. Maybe you can't afford private school. Or perhaps you've researched home schooling and found that kids that are home schooled do better later in life. But no matter why you've decided to home school, make sure that you are getting a good curriculum. It is very important to find the best curriculum for your child. The is one of the most vital of subjects to understand as the realm of the Sciences intertwines with all the other core subjects necessary for a well-rounded and complete general education during the K-12 years. Nevertheless, fear not as there are simple, but detailed methods in place to help you select the best programs for your children and to enable them to apply the subjects of their to the many aspects of adult life after their is complete.

Before beginning to map out your children's and its content, a few tasks need to be accomplished to ensure you find the best solutions for your child.

1. Determine your child's grade placement - If previously in a public or private school, get the lesson plans, or at least subject areas, of their instruction before .

2. Determine who will be conducting the classes - If it is one parent or both, some other family member, or even a hired teacher. Since they are an integral part of and developing the , they need to be in the following steps in determining the curriculum or any other curriculum they may be teaching. If hiring an outside the family teacher, this will ensure they know your expectations of them.

3. Find the your state's Board of Education (BOE) content guidelines for your child's or one of the many home school websites that have full curriculums for your child's grade level - Determine the content requirements for the coming year and the next three years of public education; example: if this is grade level 3, then also get the content guidelines for years 4 through 6. This information is necessary in developing the in the next step.

4. Compare at least three to five and sources for the course content requirements in Step 3. Find the sources that either somewhat overlap, refresh, or begin the next progression of the curriculum. This can be augmented by placement testing for the learning level. Placement tests are easily found through search engines and many are free to download. Some may contain tests for Bible studies, but the remainder of the tests helps determine your child's knowledge level without reference to religious or secular factors. They also identify where your child is in relation to the BOE grade requirements before going to Step 5 in developing their program.

5. Evaluate the new progression for the next two to three school years, or four to six semesters, to make sure there is a smooth and logical progression in the content for the remaining years of their program. This process should be done each year to allow adjustments for new course content or revised curriculum requirements.

6. Select the best for your child's program. Congratulations! You are now done with the easy part. Teaching the content and staying on schedule is the difficult, but most rewarding part.

Sending your child to a public or private school can bring with it many problems. Your child will be exposed to other children who are sick, who have not been vaccinated, and who do not have the same beliefs and values as you. Many parents find that the relationships within their families improve when their children are home schooled. Children are often bullied and teased during their school years. For children with learning disabilities this teasing can be relentless and make them terrified to go to school each day. Being in special education classes carry with it a certain stigma, causing other students to ridicule and judge the students in these classes. Often times, safety can become an issue and students have to be sent to other schools. Many parents at this point choose to home school their child who has learning disabilities. By home schooling their child, they can insure these bullying will not occur during the school day.

Many parents may worry that their child will not get good social interaction when they are home schooled. This is not the case. Children with learning disabilities thrive in sports and other activities. Get your child involved in soccer or baseball, or find out from them what they enjoy. Some children need creative outlets such as acting or dancing; these are great ideas for getting the social interaction with their peers. You can also get them involved in activities such as 4H if they enjoy animals, or cub scouts for those that love the outdoors. There are so many options, do not feel as if your child will suffer from not having friends by being home schooled. It is a great idea for children with learning disabilities to interact with other children, so getting them involved will be extremely beneficial.

One of the greatest benefits to home schooling your child with learning disabilities is you will now be their primary teacher. You will not have to worry about them not getting enough attention in an overcrowded classroom. You will be able to give your child the one on one attention they deserve and need. You will notice immediately any learning difficulties your child is experiencing and not have to rely on the schools to do this for you.

While home schooling your child with learning disabilities is a wonderful option, you do have to make sure you are prepared and experienced to do the job. Some parents go into home schooling thinking it will be easy and not take up much time this is not true. home schooling takes planning and cares, you are now the teacher and responsible for the education of your child and making sure they are prepared for the future. Many parents find taking classes or seminars on home schooling very beneficial. It is also a good idea to join a support group, both for home schooling and for being a parent of a child with learning disabilities.

You will find counterparts in these groups who can assist and guide you when you need it most. You will also find there are many companies that specialize in home school curriculum designed for children with learning disabilities. You have the ability to purchase one package or pick and choose from the packages you like; this is a wonderful benefit of home schooling that is not offered in public schools. Home schooling is not easy and most parents that do home schooling will admit to you that it is a lot tougher. It is for this reason that many parents who do home schooling get together with home schooling groups, which does make it easier. When home schooling groups get together they help all the parents do better with the home schooling. However, it is not easy to get together with all the parents and therefore the home schooling groups must do public relations and develop community goodwill.

If you live in an area that doesn’t have a strong home schooling presence, you may need to develop your own home schooling curriculums. Fortunately, there are a lot of books and resources on the subject. Check your local library as a starting point. You also may find general home schooling curriculums online. Once you find a home schooling curriculum to work with, you will need to figure out how much leeway you have with it. One of the advantages of home schooling is you can allow your children to gravitate toward subjects that interest them.

There are many ways you can home school online. Some traditional high schools offer online programs. An advantage to home schooling online in this manner is that a local school system is available to make sure your child is receiving the proper testing and studying the proper subjects. They usually supply a curriculum and have a system of checks and balances to make sure your children are studying required subjects. Home schooling lets your children learn about things that interest them, but it doesn’t mean they should ignore other skills.

Tips On Home Schooling

Let's face it but you have to realize that during the past few years home schooling has become increasingly popular. This is in addition to the more accepted arguments for or against home schooling. The reasons behind many families choosing to homeschool are many. It has to be remembered that before public schooling was considered the norm that home schooling was. Closer family relationships have also been found to be a result of home schooling.

Home schooling is legal in the United States, even if there have been and still are many controversies on the issue of whether or not the child is benefiting from this procedure; this issue if still being debated and even a banning of this practice may be applied if enough evidence is found that children do not actually benefit from it.

Home Schooling Disadvantages

Many parents eager to begin home schooling their children have though long and hard about the benefits home schooling will bring to their children. But unfortunately they often fail to consider the home schooling disadvantages which can also play a big part in their children’s academic and social development. While parents may love the idea of allowing their kids to learn at their own pace without being pressured to keep up or labeled “dummies” if they need to spend more time than most of their classmates in mastering a subject, one of the home schooling disadvantages which they may not be factoring into their home schooling decision is whether or not their skills as teachers are up to helping their kids learn difficult material.

Expertise in each subject area and the art of teaching are among the biggest disadvantages in home schooling. Certified public school teachers take several courses on teaching methods, strategies, and learning disabilities. Heavy content area specific classes are taken as well.

Required Subjects

The basic home schooling curriculum, however, is similar in all US states. It includes math, science history, and English, and children will of course have to learn how to read and write. Parents whose children show aptitude for other subjects like music, writing, or art can include those if they wish. The parents will be required to maintain a daily log of their childrens’ lessons, and the children will be required to progress at least as quickly as their public school counterparts. But the specific rules for home schooling may very from state to state.

A lot of parents are weighing the choice of home schooling due to the worries about the education their kids are getting in either public or private schools. As time passes home school programs are a seemingly much better choice. There are other manners of home schooling and the selection you choose will decide your curriculum.

Many of the parents that consider home schooling check into home school programs that practice a more spiritual curriculum. There are various home school programs that are grounded in religious belief, nonetheless the two most in demand are Abeka and Seton. Though both programs are spiritual based they are fairly different.

Originated by Doctor Anne Carroll in 1980, The Seton home school program is a highly popular form of Catholic home schooling. Doctor Mary Kay Clark became the director of Seton In 1985 and Seton carried on it's growth and presently has an enrollment of more than ten thousand students. Students that are enrolled in the Seton program and graduate from Seton's high school program get a diploma unlike other home school programs. Seton is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Seton provides a Catholic curriculum for grades kindergarten through twelve and thinks that the home schoolers of today are the leaders of tomorrow. Seton requires that enrolled students have tests every quarter and assignments must be sent in for grading. Items graded by parents also constitute a portion of the student's grade. The A Beka curriculum is a very popular choice for many homeschooling families. It is also used in quite a few Christian schools across the country.

The A Beka Books were developed at Pensacola Christian College. They are based on experience and information gathered over a period of fifty years in the classrooms of Pensacola Christian Academy by many writers. They are unique in that they do not use any currently published works for their curriculum, but instead research and develop their own. Dr. and Mrs. Arlin Horton are the founders of A Beka Book, and the series is named after Mrs. Horton, whose first name is Rebeka.

The A Beka home school curriculum is fundamentally Christian based. The main goal of this program is to ground children in the Christian faith. Every aspect and subject points toward the Christian worldview. It is a workbook based curriculum and is very detailed. It goes step by step through each concept and is very comprehensive. This is a good curriculum for those home school families who are very organized or need a highly structured program.

There are three choices when working with the A Beka Book home school program. There is the A Beka Academy DVD option, which provides two options. The first is the Fully Accredited College Preparatory Program in which A Beka keeps all of the records. The second is the Non-Accredited program in which the parent keeps all the records. Each covers the exact same material. The only difference is the price. Basically, in addition to the workbooks, the DVDs feature teachers who help to explain the subjects in greater detail.

The second option is the A Beka Academy Traditional Parent-Directed option. This is a fully accredited college prep program. A Beka provides you with teacher manuals that explain exactly how to follow and teach the curriculum. You teach the material and A Beka keeps your records for you. It is very much like a traditional school without the school building. You send in all of the work and tests and they grade them and issue a report card. There is an academic calendar along with progress reports. This is much the same as the DVD option minus the DVDs.

The third option is the Textbooks/Materials for Home Schooling. This is simply the curriculum. There is no other involvement from A Beka besides the materials. You will keep all the records and set your own pace. You can order the entire program or just the items that you feel are appropriate for your child. Many parents who choose this option will use parts of another curriculum along with the A Beka materials.

A Beka Book is a good choice for home school families. It is very Biblically based and structured. It sets a strong foundation during the early years in core subjects such as reading and math, and continues to challenge students all the way through high school. The A Beka Book home school curriculum is a great tool with which to teach your child and offers many options.
