To find out what your local homeschooling laws are like it is best if you know some facts about your state’s policy towards homeschooling. This is due to the fact that some states seem to have no need for documentation from parents or homeschooling programs about their enrollment policies or the subjects that they teach.

When you look for this information on the internet you will find that there are four categories of homeschooling laws. These laws range from no legal requirements about homeschooling to very strict laws regarding homeschooling. At present there seems to be about 6 states where the homeschooling laws are very strict. On the other hand there are 10 states where there is no need for homeschooling laws.

These homeschooling laws are also found in the territories of the US. Since there are many different criteria that states have for homeschool studies there are times when as parents you will need to provide documentation. The documentation will include parental notification to the state about your child’s studying as a home school student.

For the states where the homeschooling laws are very strict the state requires more than a parental notification from the parents. The documents that you must produce are achievement test scores, the homeschool curriculum approved by the state, professional evaluation of your child’s educational progress.

You will also need teacher qualifications of you and your spouse as teachers for your children while they are engaged in homeschooling. Some states may require that state officials visit your home to inspect if the children are receiving a high education. These are just a few of the various documents and other facts that you need to be aware of regarding your state’s homeschooling laws.

Since each state has different rules regarding homeschooling it is a good idea if you can find information about the state laws for homeschooling. The main fact that you should keep in mind with state laws and homeschooling is that before your child becomes a home school student you might need to see what the homeschooling laws are.

So how will you begin homeschooling your child? Below are few important points to help you to start your homeschooling in a better way.

Requirements: Every state in US has their own laws to setup homeschooling. So, abide by the laws, where you need to qualify to conduct a homeschooling in your area. Most of the homeschooling requirements are quite simple and it is not a big problem.

Support groups: Though it is not a compulsion to join a homeschooling support group, still it would help you, if you associate with such a group in your neighborhood. You would be in touch with the parents, who are into homeschooling. You can take advice and suggestions from them, especially when you have plans to start homeschooling. The support groups organize educational trips, such as visit to museums, zoos and libraries. You could even participate in discussions and forums, which are conducted to assist parents involved in homeschooling. You would widen the scope to exercise the process of homeschooling.

Create an environment at home: You may need to make rearrangements at home and allot a specify area and adjust a time frame for homeschooling. If you have a separate place for homeschooling, this would develop an interest in the child for studies and would have less chance for distraction, in spite of the home activities. As far as possible, allot a fixed time to teach and help the child to learn. This would help your child to be organized and disciplined.

Design a plan with easy schedules: You have to design various study schedules for everyday lessons, games etc. You can also prepare a book with a plan to be systematic and to track each day's tasks to be completed by your child. In some of the states this is an official requirement. It will also help you to understand the areas, where your child needs improvement. Develop a goal oriented study method. Try to make the study quite effective that is to start the day with a tough subject as the child will be in a fresh mood and end his academic tour of the day with an easy subject to rest his brain.

Curriculum for homeschooling: Select a method for homeschooling, which would be based on the child's learning aptitude and his learning ability. Some of the methods are Montessori classic and Charlotte Mason homeschooling. Don't purchase curriculum from one place, instead you can pick and choose from different resources.

Try to teach your child by imparting philosophy of life. You can teach more effectively, if you can cite examples from study books to illustrate your philosophy.

Initially, when you start your homeschooling, you may find your child unable to concentrate on studies or simply would not do his studies. Don't get tensed, instead relax and invite kids from neighborhood for few hours for the child to get associated with them and to feel comfortable in their company. The child would change his moods and simply would concentrate on his studies. You will soon come to the conclusion that your decision to opt for homeschooling your child was a wise decision.

So, stay focused on your reasons to opt for homeschooling. At times you may feel that you are unable to play the role of a teacher and may rethink to put your kids back into public school. Most of the parents feel that the child can be educated perfectly with a collection of good books. When you decide to home school, it can really be a difficult task to decide on the right curriculum for home schooling your children. Some parents would find using these books sufficient but it may not be true for all. Usually parents would have to go through lots of deliberation and scrutiny of various curriculums available in the market. And with the vast range available, parents tend to get very confused.

One thing to be considered before deciding on the curriculum is the fact that the curriculum should match the requirements of the state and prepare the child for any standard tests that are required to be taken. Another major consideration is the child's learning style. The child may learn well using audio - visual materials while some may prefer using the books. Depending upon the ability of the child the parents should choose the curriculum combining the various options available. Flexibility is the key in choosing a home school curriculum.

Home schooling curriculum is expensive and there are many options available. You can choose the ones at a leisurely pace from different curriculums. One may be better for math, another for grammar and another for science and so on. Never get taken in by the shiny looks of the material alone. Scrutinize the contents properly and then select. You do not want to find yourself and your child at a loss midway due to the nature of the curriculum.

There are many groups of home schooling families in every state. A membership can be fruitful. Veterans can lend you good support on deciding the right curricula for the kids. They can share their experiences about the various curriculums they have used. Though such reviews are useful, you should not depend only upon them as the requirements of each child differ. Remember, you have taken to home schooling to create an individual learning style for the children.

Haste makes waste. Never make a decision in a hurry. Give yourself and the child some time before you pick up the right curriculum. You may borrow the books of other home schooling children for some time to start off. Buying hastily would be like just buying stuff for the sake of it. You may finally be frustrated with the stuff you have got and the money wasted on it. Going by the parental instinct about the preferable learning path for the child can be better than anything.

There are home schooling conferences and fairs that are organized every year. These are good places where you have wide literature range to choose from. At the same time you also get a chance to meet the other parents and compare the experiences and advice about the various home schooling curriculums.

If you feel that you have chosen the wrong one, immediately dump it rather than make your child feel miserable about the entire thing. You can also use the free home schooling resources available online for the remaining year. If you can afford a new one - good, but ensure some more detailed research before you buy one. Sticking to the wrong one will waste your child's effort and leave a bad mark on the academic performance.

Flexibility and proper research are the keys to selecting a good curriculum for the children. And if all fails in the end, try using the library!
