Being a Home Schooling Parent: An Insider's Look

Home schooling is sweeping the United States and abroad. According to the National Center for Education Statistics for 2004, 2 million children are being home schooled in the United States alone! You are maybe asking yourself what is home schooling? Or more importantly what does it take to be a home school parent?
Home schooling is simply educating your child or children at home with you, the parent, as the educator. You do not receive federal funds and your child or children are not enrolled in a public or private school.
A home school parent by definition is a parent that has taken on the task of educating their child or children at home and I want to discuss the three most important things any parent should know and the ten things any parent should consider before taking on the task of home schooling their children.
I have been a home school parent for four years and with each year our home school has had its ups and downs and I have learned a lot about myself and my children.
The most important thing that I have learned is to trust God in this awesome task of educating and raising my children to be all that God wants them to be!
The second most important thing for a home school parent to learn is that God created our children to be a one of a kind creation, with distinct personalities and traits. I am so thankful that everyone is different with different interests. What a boring world this would be if everyone was the same! Your children are no different, learn to appreciate their uniqueness. What works for one does not always work for another, be flexible. The sooner you learn that the easier your home schooling experience will be.
The third most important thing I have learned is to teach my children to respect and appreciate their siblings and other people's interests and talents. For example, my middle daughter loves to write and has many wonderful stories she loves to tell and write about, but my oldest daughter, who has a passion for math and science, does not even like to write much less think of a topic or a story to write about, so she will ask her 6 ½ year old sister for some ideas to get her started and likewise if my middle daughter has a problem with her math she will ask my oldest daughter for help, so they are learning to appreciate each other. Believe me, when you and your children learn this important principle your home school experience will go smoother.
I hope that these three important principles have not scared you from trying home schooling with your own children. It is truly a wonderful experience in being a parent. If you are considering home schooling here are some things for you to consider:
1. It takes time to teach, prepare lessons, field trips, park days, soccer league, etc.

2.Every home school parent needs to take time out. If you don't you will be with your child 24/7 and that will lead to burnout.

3.You can home school rather inexpensively, but some curriculums or extra curricular activities can add up.

4.You, the parent, are responsible for seeing that your child socializes with friends at different events that your local home school support group set up or finding different socialization opportunities in your community.

5.The regular cleaning and laundry still have to be done and you might find yourself rearranging your cleaning schedule around school time.

6.Home schooling works better if both parents are in agreement.

7. Do your children respect you? Only you can answer that. If they don't respect you they will not listen to you.

8. Home school for one year at a time. Don't look to far ahead, you will get overwhelmed.

9.Are you intimidated about teaching?-Many curriculums offer teacher's guides and DVD's to assist you and you will find that other parents will help you if they have been through the subject before.

10.Make sure you get involved in a local home school support group. Some areas have more than one. It is encouraging to know that you are not alone and your support group will help and encourage you when you are experiencing a hard time.

Making the decision to home school can be a very difficult one and should not be taken lightly. It is a personal decision and no one can make it for you, but I hope that you will take into consideration some of the things that I have mentioned.

Home schooling takes courage and it can be a long journey but there is joy in the journey! Happy Home schooling!!!

Home Schooling and Charlotte Mason's Methodology

So you have made a decision to have your kid's home schooled. Good for you! Kids who gain their education in the comforts of their home have proven to have better results on tests and with their grades, do better in college and among the work force. Families that home school are more bonded than those that don't. Aside from your rationale for putting your children through home school, have you thought about the kind of curriculum you want to follow? Have you started investigating the array of options and techniques that are available? Making a decision on the option for homeschooling curriculum doesn't have to be a trying matter. With some analysis you can make up a curriculum that is effective for you and your kids. Here are some things you can contemplate.

Have you heard of Charlotte Mason's methodology? Charlotte Mason was a turn of the century educator. She approached education with three major focuses: life, discipline and atmosphere. It involves the use of "living" books instead of textbooks and focusing on the overall atmosphere of the home. Her ideas and methods were quite stringent centered on good study and academic habits while still making sure that schooling subjects are approached through "living" examples rather than raw facts. Her curriculum is available almost anywhere. Montessori and Waldorf schools are also becoming popular. Waldorf schools are often held to a more advanced standard than others. Some people joke about them being "schools for geniuses." The great news is that Montessori and Waldorf school curriculums can be found in Home school platforms too. The focus of Montessori curriculum is in keeping children active and working while they learn. No one wants to watch your kids learn through watching television or a computer screen all day. If you agree then this may be the plan for you.

There are several factors to consider when determining the best home school curriculum for you and your kids. At the top of this list of factor is your children's personal learning styles.

You will also need to consider your teaching strengths and weaknesses. As you set up your curriculum for the year, you have some freedom to play up your strengths, luckily. You don't necessarily stick to strict curriculum practices or units which allows you to play up everybody's strengths and points out where you need improve.

The decision to home school your kids can be made for several reasons. You may not like your public schools. Maybe you can't afford private school. Or perhaps you've researched home schooling and found that kids that are home schooled do better later in life. But no matter why you've decided to home school, make sure that you are getting a good curriculum. It is very important to find the best curriculum for your child. You and your kids will be better off the more you can learn about the available home school curricula.

The Many Benefits Of Home Schooling

Sending your child to a public or private school can bring with it many problems. Your child will be exposed to other children who are sick, who have not been vaccinated, and who do not have the same beliefs and values as you. You may find that your child is coming home from school with ideas and thoughts you do not agree with. Children are extremely impressionable and having peers with different beliefs is an issue for many parents. By choosing to home school your child, you will be their primary enforcer and can teach them the beliefs and values you want them to learn. You will not have to worry about your child interacting with other children you do not know. Your child will still be able to have social outlets, as that is an important aspect of growing up, but you will be able to know and meet their friends.

When home schooling your children, you have the option of enrolling them in an online school. These are extremely beneficial for children who are home schooled as they offer support to both parents and students. Online schools hire credentialed teachers and staff to assist your child when needed. Your child is also held accountable for assignments. Each student must complete assignments on time and be responsible for completing them. Online schools are wonderful for parents who also work outside the home and are not able to spend their entire day with their child but still want the benefits of home schooling. Many parents complain of the difficulty in getting a hold of their child's teacher. The staff at online schools is available by phone or e-mail so many parents actually feel they get better responses from them than they did when their child actually went to school.

Many parents find that the relationships within their families improve when their children are home schooled. While many may worry that siblings who spend so much time together will fight and argue more, the opposite is actually true. Siblings who are home schooled tend to get along better and find their relationships are stronger than those who are not home schooled. While each child will still have peers of their own age, they will spend more time with their siblings getting to know them better and finding they have more in common than they may have previously thought. Parents also find their relationship with their children greatly improves. By being the primary teacher in your children's life, you will find that they respect you in a different way than they did when they thought of you as just their parent. Your conversations will be enhanced as you begin to teach them in a way you want them to be taught. You will find that your children will be more open with you and look to you for encouragement and wisdom.

The benefits of home schooling your children are many. Deciding to home school your children is a choice only you can make. While many families continue to send their children to school, you may find that home schooling your children is a better choice for them and for you. You children will be as prepared for the future as their peers in regular school, if not more so. You will feel confident knowing your children received the greatest education possible, as you were their primary educator.

Home Schooling Your Child With Learning Disabilities

Children are often bullied and teased during their school years. For children with learning disabilities this teasing can be relentless and make them terrified to go to school each day. Being in special education classes carry with it a certain stigma, causing other students to ridicule and judge the students in these classes. Introduction to Home Schooling

Home schooling is not easy and most parents that do home schooling will admit to you that it is a lot tougher. It is for this reason that many parents who do home schooling get together with home schooling groups, which does make it easier. When home schooling groups get together they help all the parents do better with the home schooling. However, it is not easy to get together with all the parents and therefore the home schooling groups must do public relations and develop community goodwill.

If you live in an area that doesn’t have a strong home schooling presence, you may need to develop your own home schooling curriculums. Fortunately, there are a lot of books and resources on the subject. Check your local library as a starting point. You also may find general home schooling curriculums online. Once you find a home schooling curriculum to work with, you will need to figure out how much leeway you have with it. One of the advantages of home schooling is you can allow your children to gravitate toward subjects that interest them.

There are many ways you can home school online. Some traditional high schools offer online programs. An advantage to home schooling online in this manner is that a local school system is available to make sure your child is receiving the proper testing and studying the proper subjects. They usually supply a curriculum and have a system of checks and balances to make sure your children are studying required subjects. Home schooling lets your children learn about things that interest them, but it doesn’t mean they should ignore other skills.

Let's face it but you have to realize that during the past few years home schooling has become increasingly popular. This is in addition to the more accepted arguments for or against home schooling. The reasons behind many families choosing to homeschool are many. It has to be remembered that before public schooling was considered the norm that home schooling was. Closer family relationships have also been found to be a result of home schooling.

Home schooling is legal in the United States, even if there have been and still are many controversies on the issue of whether or not the child is benefiting from this procedure; this issue if still being debated and even a banning of this practice may be applied if enough evidence is found that children do not actually benefit from it.

Home Schooling Disadvantages

Many parents eager to begin home schooling their children have though long and hard about the benefits home schooling will bring to their children. But unfortunately they often fail to consider the home schooling disadvantages which can also play a big part in their children’s academic and social development. While parents may love the idea of allowing their kids to learn at their own pace without being pressured to keep up or labeled “dummies” if they need to spend more time than most of their classmates in mastering a subject, one of the home schooling disadvantages which they may not be factoring into their home schooling decision is whether or not their skills as teachers are up to helping their kids learn difficult material.

Expertise in each subject area and the art of teaching are among the biggest disadvantages in home schooling. Certified public school teachers take several courses on teaching methods, strategies, and learning disabilities. Heavy content area specific classes are taken as well.

Required Subjects

The basic home schooling curriculum, however, is similar in all US states. It includes math, science history, and English, and children will of course have to learn how to read and write. Parents whose children show aptitude for other subjects like music, writing, or art can include those if they wish. The parents will be required to maintain a daily log of their childrens’ lessons, and the children will be required to progress at least as quickly as their public school counterparts. But the specific rules for home schooling may very from state to state.

Choosing The Right Math Curriculum For Home Schooling

You will never find the perfect home school curriculum, but you will be able to find curriculum that works for your family. The main thing you will need to look for in math curriculum is that the quality is good and the content you want to teach is there. The most important thing is you as the teacher, not necessarily what curriculum you choose. You need to understand how your child learns and what their needs are. While you may dislike the actual subject of math, you need to make it seem, as it is your favorite subject. Your child needs to get the sense from you that it's fun and exciting, even if you do not truly believe this. You may want to teach with drawings and pictures to get the content across in a way your child will appreciate. If you are not a math expert, there is no need to worry. There are two ways math curriculum is taught, spiraling and mastery based. With spiraling instruction you will be reviewing during the day and not introducing new content often. This way your child will learn one topic very well before moving on to the next. Mastery is much the same, but new content is introduced often while still reviewing the content that was previously taught. You will also want to consider the prices of the home school curriculum. You may be able to find many on used book websites, or if you have friends in the home school community, they may be willing to give you their old books and aides. Small children often like to learn by looking at pictures that are bright and colorful, choose books based on this knowledge. Other students may find the bright colors distracting, so you will wan to look for curriculum that is black and white so your child does not get easily distracted. For many families, religion is a large reason for them home schooling their children. While math is not normally a subject religion is incorporated into, you will be able to find curriculum that suits your religious needs.

Regardless of what math curriculum you choose, know that it's the best choice for your family. Talk to other families who home school and get their thoughts and ideas on what they used and if it worked for them. You may find you have to experiment with different curriculum.
